That’s a wrap, guys! As of this evening, the great battle that was my Spring 2012 semester drew to a close. I am so tired, and so relieved. On Monday, after my Orgo final, I came home at 4 pm only to confront the fact that my biochemistry final would be about 36 hours later. I took a deep break, and quickly assembled a list of things I could do to get myself into the right frame of mind to head back to the library: 1. “Stronger.” Kelly Clarkson. The post-bacc theme song. 2. Yoga Download. 20 minutes to a clearer frame of mind. 3. ESPN’s greatest sports moments of the 20th Century.

I have been reading books on honey and am convinced of its benefits both as a nutritional food and as a topical substance promoting beauty and health. For example, I've been looking through The Honey Prescription: The Amazing Power of Honey as Medicine and Honey: Nature's wonder ingredient: 100 amazing and unexpected uses from natural healing to beauty. I talked with my friend Diane Wyzga, a bee guru (not to mention a lawyer and a storyteller) and asked her how to find good honey. After our lecture in Mesa Saturday night, where 350 GSG readers showed up, Kristina W. waited in line almost two hours. She said, “Do you remember me?” For just a year or two, she lived up the street and around the corner. A few years ago, she asked my daughter Emma to babysit after school so she could complete an extended project.  Emma was the original avatar for this site, see her photo here, at age 12. You’ll remember her, if you’ve been here that long. Can you believe I put GSG up almost five years ago?                 Now the original…

I’ve sent people to Mountain Rose Herbs for their extra virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil, for years. I’ve never had a complaint, because their product is fabulous, and we’ve gotten tons of testimonials about skin conditions clearing and other exciting benefits of beginning to use this lauric acid-rich, medium chain fatty acid (missing in most people’s diet). When I began using coconut oil years ago, my winter-time cold hands and feet disappeared, and I now enjoy good circulation. I use coconut oil generously on my skin every day. I run 1/3 cup through my hair (it’s long and…

I have paraphrased some of her comments for length: “ I have much respect for Robyn and her goals of sharing important life saving information with all of you. Her willingness to stand up for what she believes in is admirable. I would mention a word of caution though about jumping on bandwagon before you’ve done your own due diligence as there are always consequences for the decisions we make. About Dr. L telling me I should not talk about toxic dental practices and stick to whole foods topics only? That is precisely the reason I have a blog in the first place. I don’t want my readers to be as ignorant as I was when I was 27 years old and allowing doctors to tell me to feed my little boy spoonfuls of liquid steroids. I had dentists wanting to fill holes in his teeth with mercury as he got older (luckily, I never allowed that in any of my children). I’m furious that because of toxic medical and dental practices, I let a doctor inject that first baby with vaccines full of mercury…

I started using a Sonic toothbrush a few years ago. It’s incredible! I had quite a few cavities as a kid, but I haven’t had any, since using the Sonic. It vibrates the plaque off your teeth. My gums were receding from my scrubbing my teeth too hard, and with the Sonic, I have stopped eroding my gums. Moreover, my dentist tells me when I go in for cleanings every six months, “There’s no plaque on your teeth—there’s nothing to clean here.” You can get a Sonic toothbrush at Costco or any store. It’s not cheap, $50 for the electrical unit or something like that? But so worth…

    26 Apr 2012 | 12:27 pm
I needed a new juicer. Did my research and decided on the Omega VRT350 HD. I knew that I would have to chop up the veggies smaller and that it is a low speed extractor, which means a little more prep and juice time.....but not too time consuming at all.I consider myself a serious juicer person (daily) so the end result is super important. The low speed squeezes the veggies, creating minimal oxidation, high nutrition and maximum amount of juice. I used about the same amount of produce as I did in the past with my other juicer and definitely got more juice with the Omega VRT350, the pulp is…

A tahini dressing is one of the most delicious and versatile dressings of all. As tahini is made from sesame seeds, it is lighter than a nut-based dressing and is high in protein and calcium, making it a nutritional superstar. A great dressing for when you want something thick and creamy. Smotheringly good! In this issue the topic du jour is the not-often-talked-about issue of emotional, mental and spiritual detoxification and how going raw affects us on every level – not just the physical. The reason why I’ve decided to cover this topic is because this particular aspect of going raw, the whole person transformation, is my own personal most-compelling reason for choosing to eat raw and it soon engages many others. Even though at times it may be challenging to eat raw (socially) the benefits far outweigh the negatives – in fact so many times over as to be laughable! So, here’s...

Today, Living Light graduated its first Gourmet Raw Food Chefs of 2012.  I’m always so amazed by our students.  Some of them come so far and they all leave their homes to spend six weeks (sometimes longer) with us to learn how to prepare raw vegan gourmet food.  It’s a huge commitment of both time and money, not to mention how focused and ready to be taught they have to be.  It really is a labor of love.  Anyhow – I’m so proud of them and excited to see what they go off into the world to do with their new culinary greatness.  They are leaving us with a whole new way of looking…

Happy Mothers Day to all the mommys out there! I hope you're being pampered today. My mom is traveling so unfortunately I won't be celebrating with her.Instead I hiked up the little mountain (if it can be called that) in town with J. Have to walk the train tracks that sit over the lake to the that path that leads up the mountain. Here we are halfway up, last October. Yesterday I made this tasty mini raw lemon berry swirl cheesecake (HERE and HERE) with leftovers from an order for a larger 12" cake. I've been making this cake for years but this is my first time posting the recipe.

    7 May 2012 | 12:39 pm
Do you like waffles? I do - but I haven't eaten them in years. In the past few weeks J and I have been indulging in enjoying waffles. The best part about these waffles, besides tasting great of course, is that they're high in protein, gluten free, grain free - and contain only 4 ingredients. We've eaten these for breaky, brunch, and even for dinner one night. It's fun to choose different toppings for both waffles and pancakes. A hearty dose of maple syrup is a "must" in my books, and I like to add a little crunch in the form of chopped nuts, dehydrated buckwheat, or cacao nibs. Berries…

I put my dehydrator to good use this week. Kale chips, crackers, and sprouted buckwheat were on the list. I like to make periodic batches of these goodies to keep on hand. They make great snacks and the buckwheat is the perfect addition to bars, sprinkled on ice cream, puddings, or in chocolate. Even though I prefer sweet things, there's nothing quite like a crunchy, flavorful kale chip. While I've both sampled and made a number of kale chip flavors, the cheesey ones always reign in my books. I never measure when making them. I throw approximate cheddar sauce ingredients into my blender…

    AWESOME TO BE RAWSOME

  • The Raw Vegan, Part CXLXI: Waffling No More

    Tommie
    15 May 2012 | 7:05 pm
To be sure, waffles were one of my all-time favorite things to eat. I’d put away my share (and someone else’s) of Eggos, but the best ones were homemade. I had a crackerjack waffle iron that was well-seasoned and I never had any trouble with sticking. A stack of waffles with butter and syrup and I was transported! Or, in the summertime, whip some cream (none of that frozen stuff in plastic tubs for me) and add some fresh strawberries or peaches and man oh man!! I spent my days at work being distracted by my thoughts. In the evening, I’d get online (dratted dialup!) and start…
  • My Week: Strawberries ‘n’ Cream

    13 May 2012 | 8:14 pm
To be sure, this is a week and a day. Yesterday was so long and so busy, I had not the least inkling of a desire to do this post last night. But that can wait its turn… I was all excited last week and couldn’t tell why. Now I can. Our church is going to do a “God in Shoes” June 29. It’s a program for less fortunate women in the area and lots of freebies will be offered including, but not limited to, a pair of shoes. New shoes are preferred but gently used will be accepted, too. Well, you know me (or maybe you don’t). I like to shop on eBay. I’d been…
  • The Raw Vegan, Part CXLX: Wishy-Washy

    Tommie
    8 May 2012 | 7:54 pm
I was becoming more and more conflicted about eating cooked food. My sisters and I had met at the cemetery to visit Mother’s grave and I, unwisely, mentioned that DD and merm were thinking about eating only raw food. My oldest sister frowned and said, “That’s not good.” She then proceeded to give me reason after reason why she believed she was right. Funny thing was, they were a lot of my own initial objections. Then she started talking about walnuts and Omega 3s and the conversation slowly but surely was steered away from raw food. I didn’t say much about it at…

But not as often as I was supposed to be. Sunday, I’d had my visit with DD and, since I’d gotten all the materials for my SIPs (Sub-Irrigated Planter), I hove to and made them with my neighbor/cousin’s help. I had to get her to drill holes for me. I’d had quite a productive day and was in the middle of eating my last meal when the phone rang. “Aren’t you coming to the nominating committee meeting?” I just about dropped my fork. I’d completely forgotten about it. I said I was in the middle of eating—could they call an alternate? So…
  • The Raw Vegan, Part CXLIX: Back to Work

    Tommie
    1 May 2012 | 8:06 pm
I had Friday and the weekend to recuperate and then it was back to the hospital bright and early on Monday morning. I had some of the pictures from NYC on my little Sony PDA but I was waiting to get more from merm. Those would be of the wedding. He sent them to all of the relatives as a “torrent”. I didn’t understand how that worked and, as a matter of fact, it didn’t work very well with my dialup. The images were huge compared to my bandwidth. As they came in, I was able to put some more pictures on my PDA. When anyone would ask me how my trip was, I would whip it out…

  • Why is that good food good for you?

    Elizabeth
    19 Mar 2012 | 3:08 pm
Listen to this Phd. Biochemist, Hagen Schroeter, talk about food research. Here is the concept I found most interesting: We can say flaxseeds (my example) are good for you or that some part of the seed is good for you. What part survives food processing? What compound results in your body’s metabolism of the seed? What compounds (if any) remain bio-active and move systemically? I think I got that right, feel free to listen and provide feedback. He explains why it is not simple to see the mechanism or reality of why a particular food is good for you. Scientific American: Science Talk Man…
  • Food Radiation article in Physics Today

    15 Feb 2012 | 8:12 pm
Here is a quote from a free Physics Today’s article on food radiation: “Irradiation does reduce vitamin levels in foods, especially for the B group vitamins. Thiamine is particularly sensitive, and as much as half of that vitamin can be destroyed in food irradiated at high doses. Vitamin loss, however, occurs in many food processes, including cooking and canning…For vegetables, the loss of vitamins is potentially of greater concern. The FDA, however, considers change in nutritional value as part of its evaluation of irradiation processes. The agency is not permitted to…

    6 Feb 2012 | 8:57 am
Overeaters Anonymous is a group that focuses on stopping eating processed sugar. For decades now OA has successfully motivated people to stop eating all processed sugar for many years at a time. I just know this from going to meetings with my mom as a kid. Her group at the time was not so God focused as some groups are. It is an issue to use God language in that it will limit the number of people interested in joining the group. People would meet and stand up in the circle and say today I have now gone 20 years without sugar (meaning processed sugar of any kind). As a kid I experimented and…

  • Tea Time: Some of my Favorites and Home Made Mint Tea

    April
    10 May 2012 | 1:16 pm
I have never been a coffee drinker.  I simply do not like coffee.  The first time I tried coffee was when I was twelve years old.  I was with my family at formal sit down event and someone suggested that I try coffee for the first time.  Well, the first sip was very bitter for my taste.  After adding lots of sugar and milk to it I began to like it a lot and drank one too many cups of it.  I was sick for the rest of the night and ever since then I haven't wanted coffee again.  Instead of coffee I drink tea. It is only in the past year that I have…

I am excited to bring you two amazing recipes tonight.  A home made gluten free cracker with home made hummus.  I am going crazy for crackers tonight!  I have never made home made crackers in the oven before so I was hesitant about the outcome.  These crackers far exceeded my expectations in many ways: they look great, taste great, and hold together great, making them ideal for dipping.  I think they would make a wonderful snack addition to any party, or simply along side a meal. So, where did this recipe come from you might ask.  That is a very good question, I…

For Easter I hosted a brunch at my house.  I served these wonderful banana oatmeal vegan pancakes along with hash browns and fresh squeezed orange juice.  I have to admit that I normally just eat fresh fruit for breakfast and I have not attempted to make vegan pancakes since becoming a vegan.  These pancakes are just as delicious as they sound!  I topped them with fresh diced mango, coconut butter, and honey.  They tasted more like a dessert!  I originally found this recipe by searching for vegan pancakes on the internet.  I found so many options but the…

sourceBreastfeeding a toddler. Why is this news or still a controversy? I mean really. People get so up in arms about breastfeeding in public (I didn't too often but when I did I covered up - some don't cover up but I certainly don't find it offensive) or in this case, breastfeeding past an age some feel is appropriate. Really? Why do they care? Why does it matter? Who is it hurting? Honestly.Bottom line: breastfeeding is healthy for both mom and child and creates an unbreakable bond. To ensure your child is getting all the nutrients and has a strong, healthy immune system breastfeeding…

I like to think of myself as living proof that eating healthy, plant-based food is possible even within a hectic schedule. I’m a full time post-bacc, premed student, which means I’m doing intensive pre-med courses at breakneck speed. I’m also a food blogger who posts nearly every day. And in addition to all that, I like to spend time with my friends, work out, and do yoga. This leaves little room for leisurely hours spent in the kitchen, but in spite of this, I manage to make a lot of really tasty plant-based dishes each week. I promise you all that eating high raw, vegan food is within…

The one that comes to mind most recently is myraw brussels sprouts salad with tangy dijon cider dressingbut my eggplant caprese salad was along the lines of a side/appetizer. I’m a big plate kinda gal at heart, so my focus as a recipe developer is usually on salads that are enormous, or at least easily morphed into a meal-sized recipe, but sometimes it’s nice to think about side dishes, too. My favorite side dishes are always of the vegetable variety, and this fantastic, semi-raw salad of…

Good morning everyone! Happy Tuesday. Over the weekend Lori and I were going over new recipes that we wanted to make. We created our list and began brainstorming ideas. First, we knew we wanted to make another version of our popular chocolate protein thin mints. Again, we are both thrilled to hear more and more people loving that recipe! It is definitely a go-to recipe for us when we are craving something at night. Today I have the honor in sharing our latest recipe development. We wanted a “vanilla” version of our protein thin mints, and this is what we came up with. This recipe…

Hello friends! Today we have a review of a cookbook that we wish we had about 4 years ago when we first got into eating gluten free. Sure, we studied some other gluten free cookbooks but nothing like this one. Iris and Brittany did an AMAZING job with this  gluten free baking cookbook. In this gluten free cookbook, they go over so many great things in this book like: discuss all the different gluten free flours and starches tell you the best ways to use these different flours suggest for best gluten free baking to use a scale (which we totally agree with, we do) did a great job go over all…

Glad that everyone enjoyed our mint chocolate chip protein muffin recipe. Some people did ask if it could be kept raw, of course! You do not have to bake it. The reason we baked the muffin was because it makes it a portable snack that we can eat in the car, since we have to commute to work now. Puddings are a little hard to eat while driving Plus sometimes we really want something warm out of the oven!! But you could do the muffin in a dehydrator overnight. Let us know if you try this out, we will have to try it too. Today we are sharing our weekly workouts. We learned some new moves and a…

Happy Friday friends! Due to us still in the middle of moving, we haven’t had too much time to play in the kitchen. Hopefully next week will get back to it as we have missed it. We have majority of our kitchen things packed up during our moves, which has made recipe development a little challenging. But do not worry we have a lot of great recipes in our heads that we just cannot wait to start experimenting with, and of course share them with you guys! Speaking of a new recipe today, we have a new flavor of our vegan protein muffin recipe. It combines two of our all time favorite…

We recently went on a great road trip to California. It was so much fun. You see, Kamea has never been a fan of the car so we waited until we thought she’d handle it better at almost two years old – she’s 21 months during this trip. How did she do? Well, let me just give a round of applause to LeapFrog DVDs in the car – lol (and would you believe that she knew some of her letters after just one viewing?! We were looking at books after she watched it the first time – which was a couple of months ago – and she pointed to and said the sounds for…

This is a guest post written by Uttoran Sen. Eat, but don’t put on that weight. This is an amazing concept, where you can eat plenty of foods and yet it will add nothing to your daily calories intake. The secret is – “zero calorie foods”. Just a quick reality check, while we say zero calorie foods, some of these below mentioned foods in our list here are not exactly a complete zero, rather just low in calories or perhaps their digestion takes away more calories than released. Either way, they sure keep your stomach full and yet contribute nothing to your weight. 1.  Water –…

    Evelyn Parham

The most popular question that a vegan gets asked is, “Where do you get your protein?” But there is another popular question that falls in second and that is, “How will you get your calcium if you do not drink milk?” There are many ways to get calcium without drinking milk. Today you will learn about Calcium, the macromineral.  What is a Macromineral? A macromineral or a bulk mineral includes calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and phosphorous. The body needs macrominerals in larger amounts and we can get most of these minerals from what we eat.  The…
